About Ken and Valerie Shelton
Pottery hand made in Britain by Ken Shelton and hand painted by Valerie Shelton.
Ken and Valerie are professional members of The Craft Potters Association.
Ken and Valerie Shelton make all their work by hand; each piece is individually crafted in their south Cheshire / North Staffordshire Studio.
Ken makes the pots from fine earthernware. Pots thrown on the potters wheel are left to dry to a leather hard state and are then turned on a wheel, trimming away excess clay to produce the final shape, a characteristic lightness and smooth polished surface.
Valerie decorates each piece with free hand painting using ceramic colours; no transfers or guidelines are used so each piece is truely unique. Her patterns are taken from her paintings of garden and hedgerow flora, and are also heavily influenced by her training in fashion and textiles. When finished a transparent glaze is applied over the colour and the pot is fired again in the kiln.
