Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887 - 1976)

Laurence Stephen Lowry was born in Rusholme, Manchester in 1887. He is undoubtedly the most celebrated British industrial landscape painter. Famous for his industrial northern scenes along with what became affectionality known as his matchstick men, famed in the popular song. He attended private lessons held by William Fitz and was also tutored by Adolphe Valette, the Manchester impressionist painter.

His original works are highly sought after along with his signed limited editions. In 1991 the player's football association paid a record price of £1.9 million for his painting titled “Going to the Match”. He died in February 1976.
