Artwork Size: 65cm x 65cm

Hand dyed and screen printed canvas.

This is a large square stretched canvas. The fabric has been partially dyed dark blue causing the dye to bleed two thirds of the way up. In the centre is a large irregular hexagonal shape that has been bleached out. Towards the top is another smaller, pale pink, irregular hexagonal shape, partially overlapping the larger shape.

Lauren Lawton is an artist and designer living and working in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. She studied Surface Pattern and Textile Design at Staffordshire University where she discovered her love of screen printing and hand dyeing techniques. Her minimalistic, abstract style explores the intersections of nature and the human made. Lauren builds layers of expressive colour washes, embracing the unpredictability of the dye and the dyeing process. Hard edge, geometric shapes, inspired by the urban landscape, disrupt the balance of the ephemeral-like qualities and create tension between the contrasting elements. Colour is fundamental to her practice, attaching emotions to the colours that are reminiscent of a place or moment in time. It’s through this awareness that her works seek to capture the variations in small moments of the human experience and its often conflicting complexities.
