My Fathers Time by Julie Gould for Three Counties Open 2022
Painting by artist Julie Gould titled My Fathers Time by Julie Gould for Three Counties Open 2022.
Artwork Size: 90cm x 60cm
Oil on board.
My piece involves looking at the heritage of my father’s working life; he was a miner from Stoke on Trent, working nights throughout my childhood, based at Wolstanton Colliery.
The image portrays the bond between the 20 men huddled in a group with 3 central characters engaged in banter. The men are painted in the colours of the dusty coal they excavated and the background is the texture of the coal seams. Between the monochrome background and foreground of the miners is a fine orange line that surrounds them, representing their bond and the power that they provided.
Working as a gilder for Wedgwood and then Royal Doulton, after their closure I returned to college and university to complete my degree in Fine Arts.
I co-ran ArtWaves gallery based in Burslem for 11 years encouraging local artists to promote their practice via exhibitions. Now alongside teaching I love painting especially portraits and flowers. Last year I was involved in 2 contemporary exhibitions with SoTArt , Reawakening and DUST Rising, Every Other Seat.
