A very large oil painting of Market Place, Burslem looking towards the Burslem Town Hall Clock Tower. Below is a celebration of people, market stalls and flags by Anthony Forster.
The artist painted the oil painting in pre 1975 in the 1970s as part of a project called Burslem Saturday. It does however it depict a scene from the turn of the 20th century in keeping with the days of Arnold Bennett.
The flags on show include Union Jacks and French Flags. It might have been capturing a scene celebrating the end of the Great War.
Burslem Saturday project which Anthony Forster was commissioned to paint Burslem for in the 1970's, it brought together a celebration of Burslem through art, music and writing.
Ray Johnson who worked on the project remembers Anthony Forster researching the period through his film archive in particular A Pottery's Girl Romance which was filmed in Burslem and is the earliest known silent film of the Potteries

Provenance: Direct from a business business which has been situated in the town since the 1870's whose father bought the painting at the time.
