A Sense of Place - Arthur Berry 100 Exhibition unveils the Berry Archive

As part of the Arthur Berry 100 celebrations, Barewall Studio invites you to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "A Sense of Place" is more than an exhibition; it is an intimate time capsule of the man known as the "Lowry of the Potteries."

Running into 2026, this evolving display offers a rare look into Berry’s private world, featuring items never before seen by the public.

What’s on Display?

Curated by Amanda and supported by dedicated team of volunteers, the exhibition brings Arthur’s studio back to life. Highlights include:

  • Personal Artifacts: His books, ornaments, teacups, and even the hand mirror he used to view his compositions in revere to gain a different perspective.

  • Unseen Art: A cardboard box found has revealed a treasure trove of previously unseen original sketches.

  • A Lost Landscape: A giant 1950s map of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme, showing the city as Arthur knew it—before the D-Road (A500) changed the landscape forever.

  • Immersive Experience: Listen to rare recordings of Berry’s voice and explore his poems and plays alongside 1994 photographs of his studio.

A Living Archive

This exhibition is constantly changing. The team is always unwrapping items still protected by newspapers from the 1990s, recording them for our future online archive.

Every visit offers the chance to see something newly "discovered."
