Join acclaimed artist and designer Louise Adams for an inspiring day of still life painting at the Barewall Art Gallery Studio in Burslem.
Working from a carefully curated arrangement of original Wood’s Ware ceramics, textiles, seasonal flowers and decorative objects, you’ll create your own distinctive painting in gouache and ink.
What to expect
The day begins with relaxed drawing exercises designed to encourage close observation and a fresh way of seeing familiar objects. Louise will introduce the rich, vibrant qualities of gouache, a medium valued by artists and designers for its depth, opacity and intensity of colour.
Through demonstrations and individual guidance, you’ll explore flat painting, colour, blending and shape before developing your still life. There will be plenty of room to experiment with composition, pattern and contrast while creating a rich, visually striking work.
Louise’s approach is warm, encouraging and highly individual, making the workshop suitable for complete beginners as well as more established artists. Places are limited, so each participant can benefit from personal tuition throughout the day.
All materials are provided, and refreshments and lunch are included. You’ll leave with your completed artwork.

About Louise Adams
Louise studied locally at North Staffordshire Polytechnic, where she gained a first-class honours degree in Surface Pattern, before completing an MA in Design at the Royal College of Art.
After working as a freelance pattern designer, Louise became a Senior Designer at Minton in Stoke and later Art Director at The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company. She left Royal Crown Derby in 2013 to work as an artist, freelance designer and teacher.
Louise grew up in an artistic family, inheriting a passion for pattern and ceramics. She runs weekly drawing and painting classes, along with occasional themed art workshops, in the Staffordshire Moorlands where she lives on the edge of the Potteries.

Burslem, the Mother Town of the Potteries
The workshop takes place in Burslem, the historic Mother Town of the Potteries. Its artistic heritage makes a fitting setting for the day, with generations of artists, ceramic designers and makers connected to the town, from the early Wood and Wedgwood family potteries to figures associated with Burslem School of Art such as Arthur Berry, Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper, Sidney Tushingham and Gordon Forsyth.
