Bateman’s World: The World of James Bateman of Biddulph Grange is a richly researched portrait of one of Victorian Britain’s most remarkable figures — James Bateman, the visionary horticulturalist and creator of Biddulph Grange Gardens in Staffordshire.

Bateman moved in the most influential scientific and artistic circles of his age. His network included Charles Darwin, Joseph Hooker (Director of Kew Gardens), nurseryman George Loddiges, and geologist Charles Lyell. His collaborator, Edward Cooke, counted artists Turner, Landseer, and Millais among his friends. Biddulph Grange Gardens — now a celebrated National Trust property — is a direct reflection of Bateman’s extraordinary world and the man himself.

Author Bill Ridgway began his writing career producing books for the schools market before turning to local history on retirement from teaching. He lives in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
