MARY HOWITT OF UTTOXETER: Traveller on the Hill-top book 1998 by Joy Dunicliff

The Traveller on the Hill-Top, Mary Howitt (1799-1888) the famous Victorian Authoress.

This book is a biography of the authoress who became famous throughout the English speaking world in the first half of the 1800s, especially for her children's writings.

It is also a book of her husband William Howitt who was equally famous and of their connections with literary figures of the time, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Hans Christian Anderson, whom Mary was the first to translatre into English.

The book also gives a vivid picture of Quakerism in the 19th century and then the story of the ancient and little changed town of Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, which was Mary's home and the basis of many of the stories.
