Mow Cop: A Working Village book by Philip R. Leese
The Industrial History of Mow Cop — Volume One
Mow Cop: A Working Village is the first of two volumes by local historian Philip R. Leese, exploring the industrial and working life of one of the most dramatically situated villages on the Staffordshire–Cheshire border.
Perched on a rocky ridge with sweeping views across the Cheshire plain to the west and the Pennine moorlands to the east, Mow Cop has a history shaped as much by toil as by landscape. This book grew out of local history classes held at Kidsgrove Library in 2005–2006, drawing on written sources and — wherever possible — the recorded words of Mow Cop people themselves, so that the village speaks in its own voice.
- Industrial and working life of Mow Cop through the centuries
- Staffordshire–Cheshire border history and geography
- Primary sources and community voices woven throughout
- Companion volume to Mow Cop: Living on the Hill (also available at Barewall)
