Tea Bag Shadow: The Art of George Mallalieu

Compiled by Pam Mallalieu and published in October 2023 by Mallalieu Press, this is the first major monograph on the work of George Mallalieu (1941–2004) — figurative painter, teacher, and a central figure in the North Staffordshire art scene from the 1960s to the early 2000s.

Mallalieu's paintings were largely destroyed in two separate fires in 1979 and 2000, making his work almost entirely unknown to the wider art world since his death in July 2004. This book changes that. Drawing on an extensive photographic record, along with drawings, etchings, sketchbooks, and texts, it reconstructs four decades of a remarkable painting career and restores Mallalieu to his rightful place in British 20th-century art history.

George Mallalieu succeeded Arthur Berry as Head of Painting at North Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1985, having previously taught art in Ghana, West Africa, and played an instrumental role in developing Honours Degree-level art education in Stoke-on-Trent. His influence on a generation of Potteries artists was profound.

"This book covers four decades of figurative painter George Mallalieu who taught and painted in North Staffordshire during the latter part of the 20th century."
