Adolphe Valette: A French Influence in Manchester by Sandra Martin (1994)
The Frenchman Who Taught Lowry to See Manchester
Adolphe Valette (1876–1942) is one of the most quietly significant figures in British art history. A French Impressionist who settled in Manchester, he brought the light and atmosphere of the Paris school to the industrial north — and in doing so, became the teacher and formative influence of a young L.S. Lowry. To understand Lowry is, in part, to understand Valette.
This catalogue, written by Sandra Martin to accompany the 1994 Manchester Art Gallery exhibition Adolphe Valette: A French Influence in Manchester, is the essential reference on Valette's life and work. Held from 16 July to 4 September 1994, the exhibition brought renewed attention to an artist who had long been overshadowed by his most famous pupil.
