The Arnold Bennett Companion is the 1st critical overview of Bennett’s on-going significance as a figure of critical importance for the 21st century study and debate of literature.  The 14 in-depth chapters consider Bennett’s work in relation to issues such as literary aesthetic theories, political and cultural movements and practices, book design, cinema, religion, warfare, censorship, self-help, and a regional and cosmopolitan sense of place. 

The individual characters are written at a level intended to be academically challenging and innovative whilst remaining accessible and entertaining to the general reader. The collection aims to consolidate existing knowledge of Bennett's work whilst stimulating fresh studies.

John Shapcott is Honorary Research Fellow at the Research Institute for the Humanities, University of Keele. He is the editor of a number of new editions of Arnold Bennett's work, including two film novels never before published. His most recent book 'Grains of Sand: Melvyn Bragg's Cumbrian Novels' is a study of Melvyn Bragg as a regional novelist.
