Painted circa 1920s when Arthur visited the continent. The fountain dates from the 17th century, used by the town for its washing and drinking water. It is known as the Lions Fountain, Fountaine aux Lions after a family who ran an Inn in the square.
No doubt attracted to the impressionistic style, light and interest offered by the impressionists which included his tutor and art principal at Manchester Art School, the famous Adolphe Valette, who is also known as the tutor to LS Lowry.
