The Long View 2026 by Helen Boardman

The Long View is part of a series capturing the Roaches — the dramatic gritstone ridge rising from the North Staffordshire Moorlands. The title works on two levels: the literal panorama that opens up from the ridge — miles of moorland, valley, and sky stretching south towards the Cheshire Plain — and something more contemplative, the sense of deep time that settles over you on high ground, where the rock beneath your feet is 300 million years old and the horizon feels infinite. A midnight blue sky gives way to light across the rock and heather, the landscape ancient and elemental, charged with the particular stillness of a place that has been looked at, and looked from, for a very long time.

Developed from plein air sketches and notes made whilst walking in spring 2026, and completed in the studio in summer 2026. Finished with artist’s professional UV varnish.
