To The Green Chapel 2026 by Helen Boardman
To The Green Chapel is part of a series capturing the Roaches — the dramatic gritstone ridge rising from the North Staffordshire Moorlands. A midnight blue sky gives way to light across the rock and heather, the landscape ancient and elemental, charged with the particular stillness of high ground. The title evokes both a physical destination and something older: the mythic Green Chapel of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a place of trial and transformation hidden in a wild northern landscape not unlike this one which is known as Ludd's Church.
Developed from plein air sketches and notes made whilst walking in spring 2026, and completed in the studio in summer 2026. Finished with artist’s professional UV satin varnish and wax.
