The Last of the Edition
There is something quietly remarkable about this print. Family Discussion — one of L.S. Lowry's most warmly observed domestic scenes — was published by Henry Donn in 1974 in a limited edition of just 850. This is number 850 of 850: the very last impression of the entire run.
Lowry himself described the scene with characteristic dry wit: "A man trying to convince his mother about something." In that single line, he captured everything — the gentle stubbornness, the generational tug, the ordinary drama of family life that he spent a lifetime rendering in paint and pencil.
A Print with Provenance
This particular impression came from the personal collection of Arthur Berry (1925–1994), the celebrated British artist and a lifelong admirer of Lowry's work. That Berry chose to acquire the final number of this edition speaks to both his connoisseurship and his affection for Lowry's vision of northern life. It is a piece with a story behind it — and a story within it.
