Jack Smith is a well known British 20th century modern artist and is one of the artists from the circle of Arthur Berry when in London. He is famous for being one of the Kitchen Sink painters along with Derek Greaves. Both lived in the same house as Berry in the 1940/50s.

He was also connected to the Beaux Arts quartet in the early 1950s. The other three were John Bratby, Derrick Greaves and Edward Middleditch. He was taught at Central School of St Martins and later Royal College of Art under John Minton (also fellow housemate of Arthur Berry) and Carel Weight. He was also part of the 1956 Venice Biennial and won first prize at the John Moores painting prize in Liverpool in 1957.

Barewall are delighted to include this artwork at the gallery as part of the display of artists which are connected to Potteries born Berry.
