Original watercolour by C W Brown titled and named "A Classic Scene" after John Sell Cotman 1927 by Charles William Brown known by Arthur Berry as "The Potteries Primitive".
Tilted: "A Classic Scene" after John Sell Cotman
The painting is signed, dated and named. The title is written on the front in pencil in CW Brown's handwriting.
Image size: 29cm x 22.5cm / 11.5" x 9"
Frame size: 40.5cm x 33cm / 16" x 13"
Framed in a wooden slim frame with lightened slip clay like distressed finish woodgrain with gold inner and teal blue mount under glass. Probably framed in the 80s. Imprinted with The Crane ** Made in Sweden on the inside.
This is a very rare very early CW Brown original 1927 painting now available for sale, by CW Brown. Most of the collection of paintings can be found at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
The titled relates to an artist John Sell Cotman (1782 - 1842) who was an English painter, illustrator and engraver. He was in the circle of JW Turner and seemed mostly to be trained and based in the Norwich area. Its unclear why CW Brown might have been drawn to this artist although exhibitions of his work did continue into the 20th century. Currently Leeds Art Gallery are working on a catalogue of his work online which can be found online at https://cotmania.org/
