Descriptive Mining Drawings Composition 1935 is an original black-and-white mining artwork by Charles William Brown, known as C W Brown and “The Potteries Primitive”. Combining watercolour wash, black ink and graphite, this signed composition brings together several labelled studies of underground coal-mining labour and equipment on a single sheet.
Scenes and details
“Somerset-Carting-Boy” shows a bare-chested miner pulling a put loaded with coal, while a second miner stands at the coalface with a pike. The figures are illuminated by their helmet lamps; rising smoke suggests oil or candle lighting.
“Put Jigging” includes the labels “PUT”, “Incline” and “Wooden Rails”.
“Horse Gin” includes the labels “Hauling Guss”, “Waist Band” and “Hand Hauling”.
The work is signed and dated 1935 in graphite towards the lower-left corner on the front. There is no writing on the reverse.

About the artist
Brown worked as a mine safety manager during the 1930s and 1940s. This composition may have been used in his mine-safety teaching, although that use has not been confirmed. Its labelled scenes offer a detailed record of mining methods and equipment in a pre-war work.
A substantial collection of Brown’s work was donated to The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. Descriptive Mining Drawings Composition 1935 offers collectors an original example of his interest in underground mining labour and machinery.
