Headstones, Dalehall, 1985 — Maurice Wade (1917–1991)

Painted in 1985, Headstones, Dalehall is one of Maurice Wade's most quietly powerful subjects — a churchyard or burial ground in Dalehall, a district of Burslem. Wade brought the same careful, unsentimental attention to places of rest as he did to the industrial streets and landscapes of the Potteries. There is a stillness to this work that sets it apart, and a deep sense of place rooted in the community Wade spent his life observing.

Published by Petr Hajek with the kind permission of the Maurice Wade Estate, this print was released to accompany the landmark exhibition Maurice Wade: A Painter from No 57 at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery (12 October 2023 – 26 January 2024).
