Monster Wood, 1987 — Maurice Wade (1917–1991)
A characterful woodland study by Potteries painter Maurice Wade, capturing the gnarled, atmospheric quality of Monster Wood in 1987. Wade had a rare gift for finding drama and personality in the everyday landscapes of the Midlands and North — and this work is a fine example of his ability to make a familiar scene feel both intimate and quietly unsettling.
"Monster Wood" is known to be once located between Longport and Tunstall it was an area of woodland running alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal at the time Wade made the painting. In the back ground sky you can see the faint industrial landscape of pit mounds and chimneys.
