Six Towns on Film - Longton - Stoke on Trent Historical Film DVD
This collection of archive films and interviews from Staffordshire Film Archive represents the best examples of Longton captured on film from the 1930s to the early 1990s.
We begin in 1960 with the 50th anniversary of Federation, then take a steam train trip from Stoke to Longton and then join a Longton school on a train trip to London in the 1940s. Digging for Victory shows Queens Park and local allotments in 1941, and we see acricket match, Longton Park and a Blurton carnival of queens during wartime.
In 1946 wee see scenes at Longton bus station and go for a dance at the Town Hall with Jimmy Moss’s band. We see and hear of local cinemas – the Alhambra, Empire, Focus and Broadway and see the Empire burn down in 1992.
After Doris Robinson’s parade around the town as Lord Mayor in 1968 we end with film and local comments from the 1970s.
