A rare double-sided work on paper by the British artist Stanley Lewis (1905–2009), dating from around 1939.
The front presents an original pencil study of a pram, complete with the artist's own annotations. We believe this to be an early compositional study for Lewis's celebrated Hyde Park in Summer painting — making it a fascinating insight into his working process.
To the reverse is a partial figure study in pencil and watercolour, inspired by Augustus John and dating from the early 1920s — a fragment of an earlier, larger work.
Both sides are closely related to drawings published in the Liss Llewellyn Stanley Lewis catalogue, produced to accompany the 2010 exhibition The Unknown Artist: Stanley Lewis and his Contemporaries at the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery & Bedford Museum (12 June – 5 September 2010).
