The Sneyd Colliery Disaster 1942
On New Year's Day 1942, the Sneyd Colliery in Burslem was the scene of North Staffordshire's last major coal mining disaster — a tragedy that claimed the lives of 57 men and left an indelible mark on the Potteries community.
Local historian and author Mervyn Edwards presents a carefully researched account of the disaster, drawing on contemporary newspaper reports, official documents, and the personal memories of those who were there. It is a tribute to a very special breed of men, and to the tight-knit mining communities of the six towns.
At the time of writing, plans were underway to establish a permanent memorial in Burslem — a fitting and long-overdue recognition of those who lost their lives.
