C W Brown

Drawing showing work of a Waggoner 1945 by C W Brown

Drawing showing the work of a Waggoner by Charles William Brown, known as C W Brown and “The Potteries Primitive”, is an original black-and-white graphite mining drawing, signed and dated 1945. This wartime work depicts a bare-chested miner pushing a tub full of coal along a flat underground track, wearing a safety helmet fitted with a miner’s lamp.

Brown described this role as “A Waggoner” in other works. Here, his pencil drawing records the physical work of moving coal underground.

The drawing is signed and dated in graphite towards the lower right of the front. There is no title or description on the reverse. A Drawing showing the work of a Waggoner 1945 is the descriptive title assigned by the gallery, rather than a title inscribed by the artist.

About the artist

Brown worked as a mine safety manager during the 1930s and 1940s. This drawing may have been used in his mine-safety teaching, although that use has not been confirmed.

A substantial collection of Brown’s work was donated to The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. This drawing offers an opportunity to collect an original work by the artist depicting a waggoner and the everyday labour of coal mining.
