Arthur Berry paintings sells for £2,500 to raise money for heart and circulatory disease

We are delighted to announce that the British Heart Foundation have become beneficiaries of the sale of an original mixed media drawing by Arthur Berry, which sold to a buyer for £2500 including framing.

The work titled ‘Chapel’ by Arthur Berry, dated1990 is a work rooted in the culture, people and landscape of the industrial pottery town of Burslem. It has been sold to a private individual having been kindly donated to Barewall Art Gallery from the estate of the Sheffield born sculptor George Fullard.

Arthur Berry grew up in Stoke on Trent in the depression of the 1930’s. Born with a crippled arm he could not work as a miner or manual labourer and instead enrolled at the Burslem School of Art. Gaining a place at the Royal College of Art in London followed, but he returned to begin a long association as Lecturer at the Burslem School of Art which became the North Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1971. He remained there until his retirement in 1985 but continued to paint from his Stoke-on-Trent base. He was always a man of the Potteries and ‘Chapel’ was a typical of his style, a work he completed four years before his death in 1994.

Amanda Bromley, director of Barewall, representatives of the Arthur Berry Estate said “We are elated that the sale of ‘Chapel’ has been to the benefit of The British Heart Foundation, I’m sure Arthur and George who knew each other from their Royal College days would have been proud”.

The Pangolin Gallery contacted Barewall in Spring 2018, after transfer, photography and placement online, the paintined sold within 2 weeks unseen. Amanda said “We were confident the painting would sell quickly especially as available urban scenes are rare most are now in private collections”.

“Arthur Berry showed with the most famous British Northern artist LS Lowry at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in 2016, this created an uplift in the vlaue of Arthur’s paintings, with two large sell out exhibitions, regular sales in galleries and online there is an ever growing interest in Arthur Berry across the UK, Europe and US”.  Click to view work by Arthur Berry.
