St John and Baptist, North Portal, Chartres Cathedral by Reginald Haggar
Original watercolour by Reginald G Haggar RI titled "St John and Baptist, North Portal, Chartres Cathedral".
Chartres Cathedral is also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres and is a Gothic Catholic cathedral of the Latin Church situated in Chartres, France, about 50 miles south west of Paris, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Building started in 1145 with a 26 year period of rebuilding after a fire in 1194. Chartres Cathedral is sited as the pinnacle of French Gothic art. The the porches adorned with fine sculptures from the middle of the 12th century, and the magnificent and well preserved 12th / 13th century stained glass windows combine to make it a masterpiece so no surprise that Reginald Haggar felt moved to paint such an important homage to art from the Middle Ages.
