Titled: Frederick Douglass Statue
Sculpted to commemorate the visit to Ireland of Barrack Obama in 2011 as first elected Black President of The United States. Former escaped slave turned abolitionist, author and lecturer, Frederick Douglass is the Father of the civil rights movement. The full size bronze statue was unveiled in 2011 by his direct descendants Nettie Douglass and Kenneth B Morris at The University of Maryland, USA, Frederick’s birthplace. The monument in Hornbake Plaza instantly became as a rallying point for the Black Lives Matter Movement, Refugees Welcome protests was sculpted by Andy Edwards to commemorate Frederick Douglass’ many visits to Ireland and the UK where his freedom was secured financially and many of his great speeches were delivered. The abolitionist movement in Britain was pioneered by William Wilberforce and Josiah Wedgwood whose anti-slavery medallions made in Stoke on Trent and sent to Benjamin Franklin were the first innovative form of social media to highlight and hasten the end of 400 years of the transatlantic slave trade.
